Is the first ship from the ships of landing ship dock (LSD) which then developed with the class name of Harpers Ferry. Created by the company's Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans in 1993. Harpers Ferry was first served on 7 January 1995, and this ship is the LSD of the development project that can accommodate troops plus equipment with one of the ways of shortening the deck, and is also able to connect with the small boats used for landings.
On 1 September 2002, Ferry was assigned to the base Sosebo, Japan to replace USS Germatown (LSD-42) and joined the Amphibious Group 1 in the Essex Amphibious Ready Group.
