Iran navy launches destroyer

The vessel has a displacement of around 14,000 tonnes and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities.

Iran's navy has launched in the Gulf its first domestically made destroyer in a ceremony attended by the supreme leader and the commander-in-chief Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the media reported.

"Iran's navy on Friday (local time) took the delivery of the first indigenously designed and developed guided missile destroyer 'Jamaran' in the Persian Gulf," Iran's English-language Press TV reported.

The vessel has a displacement of around 1,400 tonnes and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities, the report said.

"Jamaran, a multi-mission destroyer, can carry 120-140 personnel on board and is armed with a variety of anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles with a top speed of up to 30 knots and has a helipad," the report added.

"The vessel has also been equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons."

State television also showed footage of the vessel and the ceremony at which it was launched by Khamenei flanked by the top Iranian military commanders.

Much of Iran's naval equipment dates from before the 1979 Islamic revolution and is US made. Since the revolution, Tehran has purchased a number of Russian-made submarines.

In the past year Iranian navy has carried out a number of missions in the Gulf of Aden and offshore Somalia where it was commissioned to escort Iranian merchant ships and oil tankers.

Tehran is enriching uranium, which many Western countries and Israel fear is a step toward manufacturing an atomic bomb. Tehran rejects such charges, saying its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.

On Thursday, the UN atomic watchdog expressed concern that Iran might have been trying to develop a nuclear warhead. On Friday, Iran dismissed the concern as "baseless."

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that Iran did not believe in and was not seeking an atomic weapon, state television reported, calling Western allegations "nonsensical."

Iran is under UN sanctions for failing to obey Security Council resolutions demanding that it halt enrichment. Neither the United States nor Israel have ruled out military action if it does not eventually do so.

Royal Navy Sister Ships Perform Awesome Double Act

The Royal Navy’s two newest warships – formidable air defence destroyers HMS Daring and Dauntless – have performed side-by-side at sea for the first time.

The Type 45 destroyers successfully completed a series of complex manoeuvres south of the Isle of Wight .

The pair sailed at high speeds to simulate the defence of a high-value warship and also put their communications equipment to the test as a warm-up to intensive operational sea training later this year.

Captain Richard Powell, HMS Dauntless’ Commanding Officer, said:

“Today marks a significant step forward in the development of the Type 45 class. Conducting joint trials in this way will further enhance the potent capability of the Type 45. It also marks an important step in the delivery of the 21st century Navy.”

“We have been able to build on the successes of HMS Daring over the last year and in Dauntless we are delivering a warship that the Royal Navy and the nation will be really proud of.”

Commander in Chief Fleet, Admiral Sir Trevor Soar, who was embarked in Dauntless witnessing the historic moment said:

“I’m really positive about these ships. I have seen them from the very beginning, through the design and planning to the trials.”

“It is very much like watching the children growing up. They have been great kids and now they are growing up to be great adults.”

The Portsmouth-based ships will work together for two further days before going their separate ways and continuing their respective trials programmes.

HMS Daring was commissioned into the RN last July and is due to formally enter service later this year.

Meanwhile Dauntless will be commissioned in June and is expected to enter operational service in 2011.
